Holmes SWCD is a local resource for information to identify natural resources concerns related to oil and gas drilling. Holmes SWCD staff can assist you through the Earth Information Resources Network  to map groundwater pollution potential, predict groundwater flow, show sensitive areas such as floodplains and wetlands, and provide watershed and soils information. This information can help you make well and pipeline siting decisions.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has written Recommendations for Water Well Sampling Before Oil and Gas Drilling. Locally, Deana Hudgins, Research Associate with the Ohio Agricutural Resource and Development Center in Wooster, can provide water sampling that meets the third party laboratory protocol recommended at a cost of approximately $50 plus lab and shipping fees. To contact her call 330-202-3536 or email hudgins.5@osu.edu.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Geological Survey has maps of the Utica and Marcella shale depositions, among other resources. ODNR Division of Oil and Gas has a great website devoted to providing information about current drilling and permits in Ohio. And The Ohio Farm Bureau has a two page brochure entitled "A Landowners Guide to Oil and Gas Leasing in Ohio."

Some other resources include:

The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program
Ohio Oil and Gas Association
Mohican Basin Landowners Association

Use these resources as well as your local SWCD to be informed and to know the impacts of oil and gas drilling.
