The Holmes County Geographic Information System (GIS) is a powerful tool used by government, business, and the general public to access map and attribute information about any location in Holmes County.

Historically, mapping information held at the county or local level was maintained sporadically on paper maps at varying degrees of accuracy and scale. This made it very difficult to synthesize multiple maps when needing to make decisions. A GIS takes all those maps and puts them into one central repository and tied to one coordinate system so that one map layer can be overlain on another easily. Since the data is held digitally, attributes about each feature are held in a database and linked to the corresponding feature on the map making it much easier for users to access a great deal of information quickly. The combination of multiple map layers on the same coordinate system with detailed data linked to each feature allows for complex analyses to help decision making that would have otherwise taken significantly more time to do in the past and at a greater expense.
